Although not authentic Armenian, Zankou's fast food has a great deal of Armenian and Middle Eastern influence. This family owned restaurant originally started in Lebanon, but when the family immigrated to California, they brought along their recipes and entrepreneurship to open a new store in Hollywood in 1984. Over the years, the restaurant has expanded to other nearby locations, including this Glendale location in 1992.
Today, the restaurant has become part of popular culture in Southern California—it's not too uncommon to see someone on the street wearing one of Zankou's bright yellow t-shirts, rave about their cheap food as if they make a profit on every sale, hear the name come up in a song—or even hear whole songs written for Zankou Chicken.
Zankou Chicken on Colorado Blvd. is located in a very busy area of Glendale, in an atypical Southern California style strip-mall. Just like other Zankous, this one also serves up mouth watering steak, chicken, and falafel wraps, as well as their famous rotisserie chicken in many different dishes.
P.S. Don't forget the garlic sauce with anything you try at Zankou.
