Today St. Gregory the Illuminator Armenian Cathedral serves as the headquarters of the Armenian Diocese of Canada. However, the history of the church dates back to the 1950s. The church was officially formed in 1957 as a group, and held services in an Anglican Church for many years. In 1970, the church finally purchased and consecrated their own structure in Outremont, a borough of Montreal located just a few miles north of downtown Montreal.
Because the church was not originally built as an Armenian church, it does not embody a traditional Armenian church façade. However, the interior of the church has been renovated over the years to resemble an Armenian church.
